Since 2009 UHCT has organised annual walking tours of churches in Ulster towns - visiting Cookstown, Newtownards and Portadown; in Cookstown there were visits to Molesworth Presbyterian, Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Loy Street Methodist and Derryloran Parish Church. The following year in Newtownards UHCT visited St Patrick’s, Regent Street Presbyterian, St. Mark’s and Regent Street Methodist church. On the walking tours we were joined by local people who were interested in and knowledgeable about the history of their churches but less aware of the building’s architectural heritage and contribution to their town’s streetscape.
In 2011 the walking tour of Portadown commenced at Armagh Road Presbyterian Church and then visited St Mark’s, Thomas Street Methodist, Society of Friends Meeting House and St Patrick’s. These visits are designed to raise awareness of the rich ecclesiastical architectural heritage of our towns and cities. The tour concluded with an illustrated talk by the Principal Conservation Architect in NIEA’s Historic Buildings Unit, Manus Deery, on how best to maintain these buildings for future generations to enjoy.
In 2013 UHCT will undertake a similar walking tour in Derry/Londonderry on Thursday 26 September.
